Why is the Daily News calling Mayor Villaraigosa by his first name in this headline: "Antonio lobbies for $76 million for L.A. security"?

I certainly can't recall them ever referring to Mayor Hahn as James, Jim, or, sadly, Jimbo.

Is it paternalistic racism, or just plain sloppiness on the part of the editorial staff?

Comments:
I'm sure it's because his last name is too unwieldy to include in a headline...I know that during the race they continually referred to him in headlines as rival...Villaraigosa is a bit tough to fit into a small little headline inch count..
keep up the good work on the blog...I live in Los Feliz and really enjoy it.

Thank you for your kind words...

Interestingly enough an article in today's (09/16) L.A. Times Calendar section about newsman Geraldo Rivera is headlined "Geraldo challenges N.Y. Times."

the paper has a new editor. maybe it's a new editorial policy.
