Update on the Orange Line safety controversy:

United Riders of Los Angeles, an organization of public transit users, is calling for a 72-hour cessation of Orange Line operations in order for a safety audit of the line to be performed.

This comes in the wake of the fourth crash on the line since it began routine operations just over a month ago - a miserable safety record by any standard.

Vidcap from KNBC.

I'm as non-plussed as the next guy in regards to the cheesy busway, but you gotta be kidding about taking this UTLA group seriously. It's just another faux group created by perennial MTA gadfly John Walsh. Nothing new here, move along.

Heh.

Yeah, I actually checked to see if they were a BRU front.

Sometimes the wingnuts have a point, however, and this time I think they might. It seems that The MTA's Orange Line safety strategy was/is flawed - the number of accidents the line has suffered in just a few weeks of operations cannot reasonably be chalked up to happenstance.

The MTA can't continue to blame hapless commuters: at some point thay've got to face reality and make the line idiot-proof, or they're gonna be scraping flattened cars off their busses at an alarming rate.

They've already had to slow the things to a crawl at intersections, thereby nearly eliminating whatever gains in transit time a dedicated busway was supposed to provide.
